Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team Confirms Mattia Rato and Twan Smits for 2027

Sandro Carusi’s team will continue with Yamaha for the sixth consecutive year in WorldSBK, with YZF-R1 machines upgraded to the latest available specification.

Following the conclusion of the 2026 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship, the Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team announces its riders line-up for 2027: Mattia Rato and Twan Smits will continue to represent the team, which renews its commitment to the premier production-based class alongside Yamaha.

For its sixth consecutive season in WorldSBK, the team will benefit from a significant technical upgrade. Recognising the potential of the team and its project, Yamaha will provide the necessary updates to bring both YZF-R1 machines up to the latest available specification. This support will allow the team to build on the work carried out in 2026 and approach the new championship with the aim of achieving greater consistency and more competitive performances.

Mattia Rato has been confirmed following a debut season marked by significant progress. The young Italian has steadily developed his understanding of the R1 bike and the category, building a strong relationship of trust with his technicians and establishing an effective working partnership. His second season with the team will provide an opportunity to put this experience to good use, starting with shared reference points and greater confidence.

Alongside him will be Twan Smits, who will participate in his first full season in WorldSBK. Strongly supported by Yamaha’s BLU CRU talent program throughout his sporting career, the Dutch rider joined the team for the final three rounds of the 2026 season at Cremona, Estoril and Jerez. He quickly established a positive relationship with the team and demonstrated qualities that convinced the team to continue their collaboration. The opportunity to prepare for and compete in a full championship together will be crucial in allowing him to further develop his potential.

Born in Steenwijk, the Netherlands, on 24 February 2004, Smits has gained experience in the Supersport 300 and Supersport categories, both nationally and internationally. A multiple race winner in IDM Supersport, he moved up to the Superbike class of the German championship in 2025. In April 2026, he made his WorldSBK debut at Assen aboard a Yamaha YZF-R1 before joining Sandro Carusi’s team for the closing stages of the season.

The confirmation of both riders ensures continuity for a project focused on developing young talent and strengthening its presence in the World Championship. This journey is made possible by the support of the team’s sponsors and technical and commercial partners, to whom special thanks go for their essential contribution and continued trust as they support the
team in every new challenge.

“For 2027, we have chosen to continue building on the work we have developed with Mattia and Twan. Mattia made significant progress in his first Superbike season and has built a strong bond with the team. We want to build on this understanding to take another step forward. Twan joined us only for the final three rounds, but his approach and qualities convinced us to put our trust in him for a full season.

The updates provided by Yamaha represent a sign of confidence in our project and give us additional motivation. Our job will be to make the most of them and give both riders the best possible conditions to perform and improve our results.

Special thanks to Yamaha for their support and for strongly backing Twan’s arrival in our team, sharing this project with us. I would also like to thank all our sponsors and partners who make this commitment possible and continue to believe in our work.”
.

“I’m extremely happy and grateful to continue this journey with Yamaha Motoxracing. A huge thank you goes to everyone involved and especially Yamaha who made this opportunity possible. I’m looking forward to continue working together and hopefully make great progress throughout 2027”.
.

“I’m very happy to have renewed my contract with Motoxracing and to be able to continue my journey in both Superbike and with the team. This is exactly what I was hoping for, as I want to build on the work we started this year and continue developing as a rider. Overall, the season we’ve just completed has been positive. I struggled a little more in some races, while in others I was able to perform well. All in all, I’m quite satisfied with what we’ve achieved, but I’m convinced we can do even better next year. Our goal will be to improve on this season’s results and get closer to the riders ahead of us. I’m highly motivated to keep working hard, continue improving and take another step forward.”
